Smart Structures Design Lab (SSDL) members ( Gi-jun Park, Yong-tae Cho and Tuhel Ahmed ) won SECOND prize at the Korean Society for Railways 2019 Student Railway Creativity Competition (2019 학생철도창의작품전).

SSDL is a ‘structures design and robotics’ laboratory, which operated by our Global Railroad and Transportation Management Department Chair Binayak Bhandari. The members of the Laboratory are working there as the researchers under the National Research Foundation of Korea (@NRFPR).

This year’s competition theme was “4th Industrial Revolution and Smart Railway”. The 15 teams of finalist from various Korean universities participated in the competition held at Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) in Gyeonggi-do, Uiwang-si.

SSDL has competed with their project titled “Railway facilities intruder real-time monitoring: the system using computer vision and deep learning." The project proposes a system for real-time monitoring of railway facilities and security areas that require access control using cheap micro-controller Raspberry Pi connected to the cloud via Amazon Web Service (AWS). Real-time surveillance is demonstrated by implementing computer vision and deep learning. The intruder in the restricted area (like tracks, electric installation, etc.) can be detected with high precision and can be notified to the safety and security managers in real-time via SMS sent through cloud application. The proposed system will assist the safety and security managers in responding accurately and swiftly to prevent and minimize the various risks that may arise by an intruder.

The Department Chair of Sol Intl’s Global Railroad and Transportation Management, Dr. Binayak Bhandari, supervised the team and said, “I am impressed with the achievement of our students. This is an example showing leadership and competencies needed for facing the challenges of Industry 4.0”.
